The Kano Hub in partnership with Water for Sustainable Living (WAFSLI) commissioned a borehole in Kukyel community, Kunchi Local Government Area of Kano on the 27th March 2016. The borehole construction is part of our “CLEAN WATER FOR ALL” project which is aimed at easing access to clean water to impoverished communities within Kano. Kukyel community has a population of about 200 and is about an hour drive from the city of Kano. The community's only water source is an abandoned quarry site which collects rain water. The water is stagnant, dirty and not fit for human consumption. The inhabitants share the water source with household animals and other wild animals native to the area. A member of the community, Malam Yunusa who was visibly excited told our team that no water project has been commissioned by anyone in his 40 years living there.
After the commissioning, two members of the team gave a talk to the community on the importance of clean water, its conservation and how to use the borehole in a sustainable way. The elders were also urged to form a small committee to monitor and ensure proper usage of the borehole.
The team rounded off the visit by distributing some basic personal hygiene items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps and detergents to the men, women and children of the community.
