The Kano-Hub Global Shapers community organized a blood drive campaign at one of the most busiest general hospitals in West Africa, The Murtala Muhammed General Hospital in Kano State, Nigeria. Each day lives are being lost as a result of lack of blood, and as such the Kano Hub felt the need to carry out this project, not only for the shapers to donate blood, but to also invite others to do so, as well as create awareness for many more groups, and individuals to emulate this kind of gesture.
Dr Ibrahim A Bako, the Director of Labs who led his team of doctors gave a welcome address at the teaching hospital before the event began. He cited that there is a scarcity of blood in the blood banks as they do not receive enough donations. The reasons for this are that there is a general lack of awareness in the State regarding the importance of blood donation, and that there is a lack of confidence in the system from patients who do not want to know their status and many more reasons. He thanked the Global Shapers for their efforts, and encaurage them to continue to preach the gospel of blood donation in the state.
There was a good turn-out of more than 20 donors, 9 of which were out of the 15 shapers in the Kano Hub and the rest were volunteers invited by the Kano Hub, incuding the Kano State Director of NGOs. The Global Shapers are the 2nd highest donors to the blood bank in the hospital, which is a very decent effort for this kind of event. Normally the lab receives one or two donations a month, so hopefully this event can help generate more awareness as we received local media coverage.
