From 2006 - 2009 Melda Akbas worked in various committees representing her school and district within Berlin. She was awarded for this voluntary work with the districts volunteer certificate „50+“. Early on she started initiating her own projects, such as „l.o.s. - let’s organize something'“, a project that was funded by the BAMF (Federal Office for Migration and Refugees) and was running one year with the Turkish Community in Germany (Türkische Gemeinde Deutschlands).
In 2010 she published her autobiography „So wie ich will“ (The way I want it) with random house/C. Bertelsmann on the topics of migration and integration, picking up her families story of Turkish migrants moving to Germany in the 70s. The book made it onto the Spiegel Bestseller List and Melda Akbas talked in political talk-shows all over the country. After a year of traveling with the book she worked on her second piece „Warum fragt uns denn keiner? Was in der Schule wirklich falsch läuft“ (Why is nobody asking us? What really goes wrong in German Schools) and published it with random house/ C. Bertelsmann in 2013. She won the awards „100 woman of tomorrow“ and „Germany - Land of Ideas“. She is currently working on her third piece and finishing her law degree.
